On Windows 10, Microsoft Defender always scans files before opening them, unless you have an antivirus installed by the third party. You can also check any file or folder easily too. To detect a malware file or folder on Windows 10 with Windows Defender, follow this procedure step by step.
Locate the file or folder which you want to scan with Windows Defender. Right-click on it, a menu will pop out as the following image is showing.
Now select the Scan with Windows Defender option as highlighted in the above image. An immediate scan will run and the result will show with the following screen if there will be no threat found.
But if a threat is found, it will show the message Threat found. Then a list of threats or malware will be listed. After that, you will click the Start actions button as highlighted in the below image.
After clicking the Start actions button, Microsoft Defender will perform the action and delete the threat or malware from the scanned file or folder.
